Background of the Study
Informal trade networks play a critical role in the economic sustenance of households in many urban and semi-urban settings. In Onitsha North Local Government Area, Anambra State, these networks offer alternative income sources and serve as vital channels for goods and services in the absence of robust formal employment. Recent studies have highlighted how informal trade contributes to household resilience amid economic uncertainties (Chukwu, 2023). Despite its importance, the sector faces challenges such as regulatory constraints, limited access to credit, and market volatility (Okeke, 2024). This study investigates the dynamics of informal trade networks and their direct impact on household income. It examines how socio-economic factors, market conditions, and policy environments interact to shape informal economic activities. By incorporating both quantitative and qualitative data, the research aims to provide a comprehensive evaluation of informal trade’s contributions and limitations, ultimately offering policy recommendations to enhance its benefits for local communities (Eze, 2025).

Statement of the Problem
Household incomes in Onitsha North are heavily influenced by the fluctuations within informal trade networks. Inadequate regulatory frameworks, limited financial support, and market instability contribute to inconsistent income levels and economic vulnerability (Ibe, 2023). The informal sector’s lack of structure often results in underreported earnings and economic insecurity for households. This study seeks to address the need for a systematic evaluation of informal trade’s impact on household income, identifying key challenges and potential policy interventions to stabilize and enhance income generation (Nwachukwu, 2024).

Objectives of the Study:

  1. To evaluate the contribution of informal trade networks to household income.

  2. To identify challenges affecting the stability of informal income.

  3. To propose policy interventions to support informal traders.

Research Questions:

  1. How significant is the contribution of informal trade to household income?

  2. What are the main challenges facing informal traders in Onitsha North?

  3. What policy measures can improve the stability and growth of informal income?

Research Hypotheses:

  1. H₁: Informal trade significantly increases household income.

  2. H₂: Regulatory constraints adversely affect income stability.

  3. H₃: Targeted policy interventions can enhance the economic contributions of informal trade.

Significance of the Study
This study provides valuable insights into the role of informal trade in supporting household income in Onitsha North. Its findings will inform policy makers and economic stakeholders on strategies to strengthen informal trade networks, thereby improving economic resilience and reducing income vulnerability (Obi, 2023).

Scope and Limitations of the Study:
The study is limited to the examination of informal trade networks and their impact on household income in Onitsha North Local Government Area, focusing exclusively on local economic factors and market conditions.

Definitions of Terms:

  1. Informal Trade: Economic activities conducted outside of regulated, formal markets.

  2. Household Income: Total earnings received by all members of a household from all sources.

  3. Economic Resilience: The ability of an economy to withstand or recover from shocks.
